What happens when a plan goes away?
A plan doesn’t last forever. By plan, we mean your voice and data service.
But "Why?" you may ask. Where do plans go? When we stop selling a plan, it's considered to be retired, or you may have even heard us refer to an older plan as "grandfathered." If you don't see your current plan in the Plans section of our website, it's most likely been retired.
This means that no one else can subscribe to the retired plan but everyone who currently has it gets to keep it as long as they keep a couple of things in mind:
- Keep your service active and your bill current.
If your service gets disconnected for non-payment, you won’t be able to get back on the retired plan.
- You can't get it back if you change your plan.
It's easy to change your plan—you can do so as often as you want—but once you change from a retired plan, you won't be able to get it back.
Why do you retire plans, anyway?
Advancements in technology can make a plan obsolete. Today, it would be ridiculous to offer a plan where you had to pay for text messages but, ages ago, (before there even were smartphones) most carriers charged for each text message sent and received or offered plans where a certain number of text messages was included. We evolve our plans to meet the changing needs of customers and to take advantage of new technology.
Can I get a new device and keep my current plan?
In many cases, you can. If you upgrade online, you’ll be told whether or not you need to change your plan to get a new device. Or, you can text us at 611 and we'll tell you.
